What to Know About the Travel Requirements to Cameroon

You have finally gone ahead and processed your passport renewal. It’s been a long time coming, but you’re definitely ready to head out on the trip you’ve been planning for quite a while now. You’ve done all your research, and you’re very sure where you’d like to go. All you need to do is pack your bags and buy a plane ticket, right? Not so fast.

Depending on the country or territory you’re heading, the rules for entry will differ. This is dependent on the authorities in that specific country. Anytime you can’t get any clarity on some part of entry requirements to your chosen destination, your best bet is to contact their consulate, embassy or high commission.

A popular destination is Cameroon, known mostly for being “Little Africa.” If this is your destination of choice, read on to find out what requirements you’ll need to fulfil.

Are there any requirements for entering Cameroon?

As any visa agency will tell you, yes; you’ll need a visa. Your best bet is to visit the Cameroonian High Commission in London as business and diplomatic visas are issued here. Neither the Douala nor Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport has visa-on-arrival service available.

If you are a British national with an expired visa since you couldn’t leave the country given restrictions from coronavirus, good news: the government of Cameroon will not penalise you. If that’s the predicament you find yourself in, you will not have to worry about being pursued by Immigration Police. You can leave the country on your own time, when it’s possible to do so, with no negative effect on your chances of getting a visa down the line.

For any queries you might have about your immigration status while in Cameroon, you can reach out to the General Delegation for National Security in Yaoundé (+237 22221 2884).

What about people who have dual nationality?

When it comes to adults, dual nationality is not recognised by Cameroon. If you had Cameroon citizenship previously then went on to get British citizenship, or if you’re an adult that still holds a Cameroonian passport, that same Cameroonian passport cannot be used to enter Cameroon. If you attempt to do so, you will be breaking the law.

The passport you do use has to be valid for at least six months from the date you applied for a visa.

Do UK Emergency Travel Documents count?

As long as the relevant visa is included, UK Emergency Travel Documents can be used for entering Cameroon.

Are there any other specific requirements?

Upon arrival in Cameroon, you need to be able to show a yellow fever certificate. Make sure you visit the National Travel Health Network and Centre’s TravelHealthPro website to get the most updated requirements.

Conclusion

Coronavirus has kept the world on pause for quite some time now. As the world slowly but surely opens up thanks to vaccines, travel restrictions are easing slightly as well. Still, when you travel, it’s key to fulfil requirements such as your visa.
